JOSH

I wake up alone, which is the first problem.

When you have sex like that with a woman like Hazel, you want to open your eyes the morning after and find her laying in your arms: sleepy, and satisfied, and ready to go another round all over again. Instead, she’s nowhere to be seen.

I haul myself out of bed, hungry and in a bad mood – which are problems number two and three. How did such a perfect mind-blowing night suddenly fall apart? One minute, we’re having the kind of wild, filthy sex that changes a man’s life forever, and the next, she’s storming off in a huff – and taking all the damn room service with her.

I don’t understand it. She’s not even close with Avery! Hazel just came out here to cash an easy check, and relax in the sun. If the wedding is called off, it makes no difference to her real career. But somehow, pointing out that my uncle would be better off with a woman who really loves him – and not just his flashy Hollywood contacts – makes me some kind of villain.

She’s wrong.

I shower and dress, then head up to the main resort to grab some breakfast. The dining pavilion is already busy when I arrive, so I fill a plate from the groaning buffet, and look around for a free table.

And also any sign of Hazel.

“She’s off planning some wedding events for the day,” Reeve materializes beside me, munching on an apple.

“Who is?” I play dumb, but the man just gives me an amused smirk.

“Hazel’s the same way: absolutely zero poker face.”

He follows me to a table, and sprawls in a chair, munching his apple and watching the rest of the guests mingle. “So, New York,” he says casually.

“Yup.”

“Single?”

“Uh huh.”

“No kids?”

“Nope.”

“Want them?”

“Maybe.” I reply.

Reeve gives me a look. “No maybe about it, as far as my sister is concerned. She and Lottie are a package deal.”

I pause demolishing my waffles. He’s talking kids, while I’m wondering if the woman will even talk to me again. “I think you’ve got the wrong idea,” I say carefully. “Me and Hazel are just… hanging out, getting to know each other.”

“Uh huh.” Reeve reaches over and steals a piece of my bacon. “A casual vacation fling, and then it’s adios, and you’ll never see her again?”

Never see her again…

The idea sticks in my gut, like my body is automatically rejecting it. Still, I take a gulp of juice and shrug. “Maybe.”

Reeve arches an eyebrow. “Well, you’re just full of ‘maybe’s’, aren’t you?”

I don’t say anything to that. I just eat my waffles, while Reeve keeps watching me, doing his ‘protective brother’ routine. “Anything else?” I ask, eventually. “You want my bank statements? Employment history? Character reference from my third-grade homeroom teacher?”

“I’ll take a rain check on that.” Reeve grins. “Since you’re already head-over-heels for her.”

“And how do you figure that?” I ask, amused.

Reeve stands, leaning to grab the last of my bacon. “Because you would never let me steal food from your plate if you weren’t,” he says with a wink.
